Warriors rally past Southwest Mississippi in five sets

DECATUR, Miss. – East Central Community College stormed back from a two-set deficit to defeat Southwest Mississippi 3-2 Wednesday night in Founders Gymnasium at Community Bank Court, moving the Warriors to 4-2 on the season.

The Bears (1-9) claimed the opening sets 27-25 and 25-21 before the Warriors regrouped to dominate the third 25-13. With outside hitter Cecilia Hikari-Hosaka returning from injury and entering the match in set three, ECCC rode the momentum to close out the final two frames 25-15 and 15-9.

Freshman setter Anna Wojtczak fueled the comeback with a school-record 48 assists, breaking her own mark. She also added 12 digs and chipped in at the net with two blocks. Ainslee Copeland powered the attack with 20 kills, while Riley Tosseng followed with 17 kills at a .375 hitting percentage. Emily Truan anchored the defense with 23 digs.

"We certainly seem to like doing things the hard way," head coach Patrick Hiltz said. "Fortunately we found ourselves just in time after a poor start in set one and two. Had some players step up when their name was called as well. Very good display of a TEAM win tonight."

The Warriors finished with 56 kills as a team, hitting .189, while holding the Bears to just eight kills in the decisive fifth set.

East Central will be back on the road Monday, Sept. 8, for a 6:00 p.m. matchup at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
