Former ECCC Baseball Greats Meet in Yankee Stadium

Two former East Central Community College Diamond Warriors recently had a chance to meet at Yankee Stadium in New York City.

Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson (left) and New York Yankees pitching coach Marcus Thames shared a moment near home plate at the famed ball park.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Anderson played for East Central in 2012 and 2013, helping lead the Warriors to a State Championship. He was first team National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region 23 and Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges All-State both seasons, and first team NJCAA All-American in 2013. He led the nation in batting with a .495 average and was named the NJCAA Male Athlete of the Year in 2013. Anderson was drafted by the White Sox in 2013 as the 17th overall selection in the Major League Baseball Draft.

Louisville native Thames was the first ECCC baseball player to join the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He played baseball at East Central in 1996 and 1997. Thames led the 1997 team with a then school record .420 batting average, 13 home runs, and 70 RBI. He was named NJCAA All-American, All-Region 23, and MACJC All-State following the season. Thames was then drafted by the New York Yankees, and also played for the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, and Los Angeles Dodgers from 2002-2011.
